The integration of internet-based data systems with Industrial Control Systems (ICS) without adequate security leaves energy facilities vulnerable to cyber attacks, UK-based insurers Willis said in a new report.
The insurer said that while the recent practice of integrating controls with other IT systems aimed at improving efficiency by giving managers access to field data in real time, the "seemingly innovative development has increased the possibility of oil and gas infrastructure being opened up to a cyber attack".
