The US supermajor said the spill was the result of “an apparent breach” in the Pegasus pipeline, which carries crude oil from Patoka, Illinois to the Texas Gulf Coast. The cause of the spill is remains under investigation.
The 1381-kilometre pipeline was shut in on Friday while emergency response personnel, which ExxonMobil said were on the ground within half an hour after the leak was detected, focused their efforts on keeping the crude from entering a nearby lake.
