Louisiana-based environmental engineering outfit Providence Photonics will market the detection system known as InteliRed to companies worldwide, ExxonMobil said in a statement on Monday.

Providence also helped the oil giant develop the system, which ExxonMobil said is designed to "improve process safety and environmental performance at oil refineries, chemical plants, liquefied natural gas facilities and other gas processing facilities".

The announcement comes on the heels of an expansive report funded in part by the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation that said leaks from pipelines and compressor stations, among other things, have contributed to levels of atmospheric methane that are around 50% higher than federal US estimates.
