The first cargo totalled 70,000 tonnes of oil and was delivered to customers in north-western Europe.

It was purchased by two top European energy companies and sold under a direct contract.

The new type of oil, Arctic Oil from the Russian shelf, has never previously entered the global market.

Once production volumes increase, the feedstock will be sold under long-term contracts.

Gazprom said the oil was moved using the vessels Mikhail Ulvanov and Kirill Lavrov, purposely built for shipping oil from the field.
