The demonstrators unfurled a banner proclaiming ‘No Exxon Valdez in Russian Arctic’ after climbing up the Seadrill-owned semi-submersible Polar Pioneer at the Westcon yard on Norway’s west coast in the environmental group’s latest protest against Arctic drilling.
A total of 16 activists took part in the early morning demonstration, of which two were dressed as polar bears and boarded the rig, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez tanker spill off Alaska – including one US protestor, Ethan Gilbert, who witnessed the accident as a child growing up in the state.
