The 4000-square-kilometre shoot will mark the first major survey of the "significantly underexplored" deep-water Southern Porcupine basin, Ion said.
Drilling results in the area so far have shown an existing petroleum system, and 2D data indicates "significant sediments and prospective structures", the company said.
It is the first joint shoot for the Ion-Polarcus team, who announced their tie-up last year.
"The alliance provides us access to a world-class seismic fleet," Ion chief executive Brian Hanson said.
