The Chinese state-owned giant signed a non-binding letter of intent with LNG Ltd in August last year to secure gas supply for the latter’s proposed 3 million-tonne-per-annum liquefied natural gas project at Fisherman’s Landing in Gladstone, Queensland.
PetroChina then acquired Molopo Energy’s Queensland gas assets in November. Although, this was insufficient to meet Fisherman’s Landing’s minimum gas needs, and so the company began negotiations for a takeover of Australia’s WestSide, which held gas assets next to Molopo’s permit areas.
