The issues arose as the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) stopped using an automated system to identify unpaid taxes because of technical problems. It also outsourced some audit functions to the state's natural resources department (DNR) as part of a government streamlining initiative.
"Severance taxes owed but not paid to the state may have gone undetected by LDR over the past three years," the Louisiana Legislative auditor said in a report.
