The tally for 679 deals with disclosed values in the past year compares to just $172 billion in 2011 and the previous record of $212 billion set in 2010, according to fresh tracking data jointly published by Houston’s PLS and India’s Derrick Petroleum Services.

PLS managing director Brian Lidsky said the jump was largely accounted for by a trio of mega-deals collectively worth $97 billion, or 38% of the annual total.
