Saturday’s poll saw the Coalition, a formal alliance between the Liberal Party and the National Party, come out on top with Tony Abbott preparing to be sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Australia.
The outgoing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd conceded defeat, also announcing his resignation as the Australian Labor Party leader.
Abbott has just started forming his front bench team and has not yet confirmed Macfarlane as the resources and energy minister, but industry employer group Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) has already welcomed his “imminent appointment”.
