"We ... appealed the ecological fines," aspokesperson for the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) told Reuters oncondition of anonymity.
The appeal was filed at the regional environmentaldepartment of the Atyrau Region in western Kazakhstan where Kashagan islocated.
"Whether we appeal also at national level will bedecided at a later stage," the NCOC official said.
Output at Kashagan — the world’s biggest oil discovery in 35years — began in September.
