The well, in which the Colombian oil company has a 30% stake, was drilled in the DeSoto Canyon area in 6394 feet of water 70 miles off Louisiana.
"The presence of oil was confirmed by wireline logs after drilling the DC 134-1 well and a planned sidetrack," Ecopetrol said in a statement.
