The earthquake, which reportedly caused tremors in Moscow 7000 kilometres away, occurred in the Sea of Okhotsk off Kamchatka peninsula in the early hours of the morning local time.

The US Geological Survey rated the quake as 8.3 magnitude but Russian authorities put it at 6.7. It occurred some 600 kilometres below the sea’s surface.

Authorities on the major oil and gas province of Sakhalin Island initially issued a tsunami warning but this was later lifted.
