The London-based company posted $256 million in net income for the first quarter, up from $150 million a year earlier. That equated to about $0.99 per share in the 2014 period and $0.59 per share in the 2013 quarter.

Revenues for the 2014 quarter were $1.3 billion, up from $971 million in the first quarter of 2013.

Revenues were helped by a 54% year-on-year increase in contract drilling margins.
