The permit is held by the company’s subsidiary NWE Mirrabooka.
Norwest said after discussions with joint venture partner Wessex Exploration and the UK Department of Energy & Climate Change, a decision was made to relinquish the permit sooner.
The company will now re-apply for the more prospective parts of the permit at the 28th offshore licensing round, expected to open in February 2014.
