Heatley was one of two ministers today dropped from the Cabinet by Prime Minister John Key.
Key did not explain why Heatley - who also held the Housing portfolio - had been shown the door. Heatley had been appointed Energy Minister in late 2011.
Key said: “I have made the judgement that it is time for fresh energy and ideas, and for other members of our talented 59-strong caucus to be given an opportunity.”
