The state-run Brazilian giant said in a statement that its Carioca Norte well, or 3-SPS-100, was drilled to 5576 metres and hit a 83-metre oil column.
It was drilled 2152 metres of water about 275 kilometres off the coast of Sao Paolo.
The area has already seen three discoveries, including an initial wildcat, Carioca Nordeste and Carioca Sela.
Petrobras has a 45% stake and is operator in the BM-S-9 block, while BG E&P has a 30% stake and Repsol Sinopec a 25% stake.
