The company on Tuesday confirmed the presence of good quality 31-degree API oil while drilling the much-delayed Sagitario well (1-SPS-98) off the coast of Sao Paulo state, at a water depth of 1871 metres.
It is the first well to be drilled in block BM-S-50 and was spudded in March last year by the Diamond Offshore drillship Ocean Clipper.
UK-based block partner BG Group first mentioned drilling the Sagitario prospect in 2009 but the programme suffered delays due to a lack of available drilling rigs, in addition to Petrobras choosing to focus on drilling exploration wells and appraisal wells in blocks BM-S-11 and BM-S-9.
