In a statement late Friday, the state-controlled Brazilian oil giant posted net income of 5.56 billion reais ($2.74 billion) for the three months ending in September.

That compared to the loss of 1.34 billion reais in the second quarter of 2012. The latest results, however, were still lower than profits in the year-ago period of 6.33 billion reais.

"This result indicates a significant improvement compared to last quarter," the company said.
