The report found that putting in place a UK shale supply chain could involve an investment of £33 billion ($55 billion) over an 18-year timeframe.

The study by Ernst & Young (EY) was commissioned by the UK Onshore Operators Group (UKOOG) and part-funded by the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills.

Business & Energy Minister Michael Fallon first signalled the initiative was on the way last December to determine the supply chain and skills needed to build a single shale pad and outline which of the necessary capabilities were currently lacking within the UK.
