The problem was reported just before noon on Thursday and is believed to have stemmed from valve problems on an oil pipeline of Savia Peru, according to the El Comercio newspaper and the Agencia Andina.
Oil sightings were reported from the beaches of Punta Lobos and Bateria Primavera, though local responders including state player Perupetro said the spill had been largely controlled by 2 pm.
