It was not clear how much Rice paid for the leases, which the company acquired by the end of February. At year-end 2013 Rice held about 43,000 net acres in the Marcellus and 47,000 acres in the Utica.
The recent acquisition would add about 7000 acres to the Marcellus position, chief executive Daniel Rice said on a conference call last week.
