A memorandum signed between the pair on Friday had been expected as Rosneft hunted a partner with which to boost output in the region following a recent company acquisition.

The agreement, signed by Rosneft president Igor Sechin and CNPC chairman Zhou Jiping, aims to "expand cooperation in upstream projects in East Siberia", Rosneft said on Friday.

The pair envisages setting up a joint venture in which Rosneft would hold a 51% stake and CNPC the balance.

"Development
