The Juxia prospect was spud on 20 January with the Noble Max Smith in the BM-C-47 block, a spokeswoman told Upstream.
If successful, the Juxia well could be tied back to existing infrastructure in the heavy-oil field, Statoil Brazil president Thore Kristiansen told Upstream in October.
Peregrino is currently producing around 100,000 barrels per day of oil. Statoil is still undertaking a study for a second phase of development at the field.
