The block covers 6000 square kilometres in the Kariba basin which gravity and seismic data suggests has a thick sequence of Karoo-aged sediments.
Mobil explored the basin in the 1980s but, while it gathered 2D seismic over its acreage, it never drilled any wells.
Swala said it intended to reprocess and reinterpret the legacy seismic data covering its acreage during the first year of its work programme.
