Transocean said in a statement on Monday that 66-year-old Michael Talbert will call it quits within a year if he is re-elected at the company's annual meeting on 17 May. If he wins the chairmanship, he will retire from that post no later than the board's meeting in November when a new independent chairman will be named.

“After consultations with our shareholders, I have decided to retire from the board on a timetable that will allow the board to carefully select a new chairman who will help guide the company in the creation of sustainable, superior value for all shareholders,” Talbert said in the statement.
