The 25/5-9 exploration well in licence PL102 F/G intersected 19 metres of net pay in the Heimdel reservoir.
Total said the size of the discovery was between 3.1 million and 12.5 million barrels of recoverable oil.
Joint venture partner Ithaca Energy said the well was close to existing infrastructure.
Wireline logs and pressure data have confirmed hydrocarbons, with samples of oil and water taken for analysis.
