The Zug, Switzerland-based company said it will have 14 existing ultra-deepwater units available in 2014, almost twice that of rival Ensco, which has eight free, Transocean said in an investor day presentation.
Other competitors have even lower levels of uncontracted rigs; Seadrill has five, Noble Corporation has two and Diamond Offshore has one, Transocean said.
But utilisation improvement may be hampered by an abundance of ageing floating units, with at least 160 rigs on the market that are more than 30 years old, the company said.
