The Olensvaag yard on the west coast of Norway said it is laying off 20 employees with effect from 1 February, with new rules on redundancy that came into force at the turn of the year also a factor behind its decision.

Chief executive Arne Birkeland said the regulatory change has given the company less flexibility to cope with swings in activity and also warned of further redundancies coming next month as the yard has been left with a labour surplus due to a dearth of new contracts.
