A cyclone warning has been issued for coastal areas from Bidyadanga to Onslow including the towns of Port Hedland, Karratha and Onslow and extending inland to Paraburdoo, Tom Price and Newman.
The cyclone is set to intensify and cross the coast between Karratha and Port Hedland.
Winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour and heavy rainfall are hitting the region.
Very destructive winds with gusts of more than 200 kilometres per hour are likely as the cyclone crosses the coast.
