The figure represents a 21% increase from the $4.7 billion invested in Sergipe-Alagoas in the past decade.

Petrobras will direct some of the resources to revitalise production at the mature Carmopolis field. Carmopolis was discovered 50 years ago and remains the biggest onshore field in Brazil, with an output of about 20,000 barrels per day of oil.

Production in Carmopolis began to decline in the 1990s, and Petrobras resumed investment in the field in 2002, to reverse its declining trend.
