The West African neighbours are hosting the biennial tournament for the first time and for oil and gas rich Equatorial Guinea it marks a milestone in its development.
As well as boosting its international profile, the tournament has required the government to invest in infrastructure to handle the expected influx of visitors.
Two new stadia have been built in Malabo on Bioko Island and at Bata on the mainland while airports, accommodation and roads have been upgraded.
