CCS plan gets nod in Japan

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI) has given approval for a consortium of Japanese companies, including upstream players Inpex and Japan Petroleum Exploration Company (Japex) to establish a geological carbon dioxide storage technology research association, writes Amanda Battersby.

The association will promote the development of technologies related to large-scale carbon dioxide capture and storage — about 1 million tonnes per annum — at suitable storage sites in Japan, as well as the improvement of social awareness and acceptance of CCS technology.

CCS is considered as a significant initiative to counter global climate change, according to the association.

“However, CCS commercialisation requires that the safety and reliability of large-scale and efficient CCS be adequately demonstrated,” it admitted.
