The Clariscan domed scanning sonar combines wide bandwidth composite transducer technology developed by Kongsberg Maritime’s Canadian subsidiary, Kongsberg Mesotech, with a patented acoustic lens.

Noting the “exceptional” image quality produced by the Clariscan, Kongsberg Mesotech sales manager Daryl Morse describes the acoustic lens “one of the most significant enhancements in the history of scanning sonar”.

Domed sonars were introduced in the 1990s using enclosed transducers in an oil-filled dome to provide mechanical protection and eliminate flooding due to O-ring failure on the exposed transducer shaft.
