One challenge was the small difference in density between the heavy oil and the produced water — about 74 kilograms per cubic metre — that made traditional gravity-enhanced separation technologies less effective.
“We needed to have large vessels to increase the retention time, and that’s a conflict with space and weight and footprint requirements,” he says.
The system includes eight liquid-filled compact flotation units.
