The most common of the artificial lift methods is beam lift, used in an estimated 70% of wells. Beam lift uses a pumping unit at the top of the system, such as the iconic “nodding donkey” pump jack, to move a long string of rods down to the bottom of the well. As the rods move up and down, so does a plunger moving inside a fixed barrel, which accepts fluid from the reservoir and moves it to the surface one stroke at a time.
