Both Halliburton and Schlumberger, as well as Halliburton’s merger partner Baker Hughes, have developed and tested technologies to allow operators to refracture shale wells and experimented with the service in basins as diverse as Eagle Ford, Haynesville and Marcellus.

Now, the technology appears to be taking off as operators look to boost production despite much lower capital spending budgets.

“I would say there are thousands of wells in North America land that are candidates for refracturing and this is both shale liquids and shale gas,” Schlumberger chief executive Paal Kibsgaard said on a conference call with investors.
