A NEW semi-submersible being built at the Caspian Shipyard at Bibi Eybat, close to the Azerbaijan capital Baku, will be able to accommodate a 20,000 pounds per square inch blowout preventer unit when it is launched in early 2017.
However, Damon McLeod, manager for new projects at Caspian Drilling Company (CDC), told Upstream that whether 20K technology is installed immediately on the rig will depend on the requirements of oil companies operating in the Caspian Sea.
