The technology uses tracers to tag the native oil, gas and frack water in each stage of an unconventional well. Samples are taken at regular intervals for on-site or remote lab analysis. The stage flow data helps determine the most effective stimulation conditions and to identify where stimulation is not effective, information that can be extrapolated to future wells with similar geophysical expectations, according to the company.
Smart tracers
UK-based Tracerco, part of the Johnson Matthey group of companies, has deployed its smart tracer technology to save operators up to 20% in unconventional oil and gas reservoir stimulation costs, the company says.
