Huisman’s yard in Schiedam, Netherlands, is packed on a late winter day, as it has been for most of the past few years. Pipelay towers stand, sentry-like, on the dock just outside the company’s offices, awaiting installation on subsea construction vessels scheduled to arrive soon. Among the vessels anchored bow-to-stern quayside are the Ceona Amazon (Upstream Technology, February 2015) and Lewek Constellation, two of several high-profile newbuilds that sport Huisman equipment.
Towering ambitions
Less than five years after the first drillship sporting Huisman’s distinctive multi-purpose tower hit the waves, the company has unveiled plans for a third-generation vessel and drilling package designed to make deepwater drilling faster and safer. Huisman chief executive Joop Roodenburg talks to Russell McCulley about automation, efficiency and the challenge of introducing new drilling technology to a conservative industry.
