Anadarko filed for a permit earlier this month to plug and permanently abandon a well in Mississippi Canyon Block 711, home to Gomez.
The company is understood to be using well-intervention vessel Helix Q4000 for the work, which is expected to take about a month to complete.
The Gomez field, once tied back to the Innovator semi-submersible platform, has not produced oil or gas since mid-2013, according to US records.
