In 2002, about 3000 police were deployed at Eket to protect the export terminal and in February 2001 exports were halted by the community. The demand then was for more jobs and for ExxonMobil to relocate its country headquarters from Lagos to Eket.

Output at ExxonMobil’s Qua Iboe terminal, at Eket in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State, was briefly curtailed last night when demonstrators invaded the facility, the US supermajor said.
