The Austrian company made the Katandra-1 find in late 2004, encountering a seven-metre column of 48 degree-API oil in the Upper Vulcan formation at a depth of 1369 metres.
The 3D seismic will help determine an appraisal well location, said project partner Avery Resources, which has a 10% interest in block AC/P24 containing Katandra.
OMV owns two nearby marginal oilfields called Audacious and Tenacious, which it has toiled with for years to commercialise.
