Franklin, 53, a geologist by training, joined BP in 1973 and worked for 18 years in various exploration and management positions before joining Clyde in 1991; he was appointed managing director in 1994.
Following the takeover of Clyde in early 1997, Franklin became chief executive of Paladin, a position he held until the company was sold in early 2006 to Talisman Energy.
