North Transgas was set up in 1997 by Gazprom and Fortum to build a pipeline between Russia's Baltic coast and Germany.

"The rise in Gazprom's share in North Transgas is connected with the start of the realisation of the project to build the North European pipline," Gazprom said in a statement.

The pipeline will allow Gazprom, which supplies Europe with a quarter of its gas needs, to boost exports to a number of European nations.
