Gazprom's deputy chief executive Alexander Ryazanov said the company now believed the remote Arctic Barents Sea field contains about 3.7 trillion cubic metres of gas, more than 15% higher than the previous estimate of 3.2 Tcm.
Five bidders - France's Total, Norway's Statoil and Norsk Hydro and US companies ConocoPhillips and Chevron - will find out by 15 April if Gazprom has chosen them to partner it in Shtokman.
