National Oil & Gas Authority chief Abdul-Hussain bin Ali Mirza said international oil companies will be invited to explore in co-operation with the Bahrain National Petroleum Company.
The Bahrain News Agency said the contract winner will be announced this year. It gave no further details on the areas to be offered.
Bahrain produces about 35,000 barrels per day from its Awali oilfield, according to the latest report on the country from the US Energy Information Administration.
