Golar LNG has been making fresh enquiries with shipyards about ordering additional tonnage.

The John Fredriksen-controlled company is thought to be considering booking up to six more LNG newbuildings but is said to be playing hard-ball on price.

“Mr John Fredriksen is always hungry,” one South Korean yard official said.Talk of further orders has baffled market players, some of whom have already expressed some nervousness about the overhang of 30-plus uncommitted LNG carrier newbuildings that are due to emerge from shipyards from third-quarter 2013 onwards.

Golar is already sitting on the largest pile of these with 11 unfixed speculative LNG carrier newbuildings.
