Crimea contract awarded

Gas producer Chernomorneftegaz, which operates on the Crimean Peninsula annexed by Russia last year, has awarded a contract for the design of a subsea gas pipeline connection to Russia and a network of two regional gas pipelines to Simferopol-based Shelf design institute, writes Vladimir Afanasiev.

Chernomorneftegaz will pay about $2.7 million for the work, which is due to be completed by 30 April 2016.

Under the preliminary plan, the pipeline to carry gas to the peninsula will start in the Kuban region of Russia and then run about 16 kilometres subsea to cross the shallow Kerch Strait, separating Crimea from Russia.

For the potential second and third phases of the project, two more pipelines — Kerch- Simferopol and Simferopol-Sevastopol — have been proposed by Chernomorneftegaz.
