US MAJOR Chevron is shutting down the onshore Wafra field, jointly owned by Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, for maintenance.

However, the move could become a permanent suspension amid a bruising row between the two Persian Gulf neighbours, although the scheduled two-week shutdown may offer a breathing space for a negotiated settlement.

Output from the field, which is capable of pumping 220,000 barrels per day, has fallen to 190,000 bpd amid the dispute, which has led to a shortage of equipment and expatriate staff.
